This is our amazing 6-year-old Nana Khadija, who is legally blind. After just one short month at Shield City, Nana has learned to feed herself. Nana has microcephalus, a serious condition in which an infant is born with a smaller head, sometimes because of malnutrition or toxins during pregnancy*.
Nana loves to try new tasks that we give her! Nana’s tutors are working on her hand strength using clothespins and putting small objects into tubs. We have also started working on beading.
She knows when she has arrived at the center and loves to clap along with the songs. She is a total sweetheart and is learning better motor skills with her hands when she comes each week. So exciting!
Nana is one of the 50 some special needs children who visit Shield City each week for tutoring and physical therapy. You can sign up to sponsor a child like Nana below. Thank you for your support for our kids here in Kano.
* According to Mayo Clinic, "microcephaly (my-kroh-SEF-uh-lee) is a rare neurological condition in which an infant's head is much smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex. Sometimes detected at birth, microcephaly often occurs when there is a problem with brain development in the womb or when the brain stops growing after birth."
